Jay

All I want is for Lauren to understand just how special she is to me. I’ve mated her and made my nest for her. But she’s still not sure I want her and only her. I can feel her trepidation as a weight swinging from the bottom of my heart.

I kiss her, hoping it will change how she feels. A human kiss for a human, proving to her I can be better than any human.

“I am yours, Jay.” She stares up at me when I release her. “No one else’s.”

“Good, because once we’re back at the eyrie, I’m going to take a ship to Earth to teach human males about females.” I’m vibrating with anger that any species would treat a female the way my eregri has been treated.

“You don’t need to do that, Jay.” Lauren dips her head, and when she looks back, her eyes are full of tears.

“Do not cry for him.” I use my thumb to catch the water. “Never cry for him.”

“Oh, god, no, Jay!” She chokes out something that is half sob, half laugh. “I’m not crying for him! I’m crying because you’re the sweetest, kindest male in the entire universe! You are utter perfection, and I don’t deserve you.”

“Eregri.” I breathe the word as it is meant to be said, like a prayer to the Goddess. “You deserve to be happy, and I will make it so.”

Lauren runs her little pink, clawless hand through my feathers as I settle in beside her. She toys with the smaller ones on the ridge of my wing, and I do my best not to allow her to see my growing arousal. I’d mate her all the time if I could. After a while, she sleeps, her eyes closed and face at rest.

I stare up at the ceiling and turn my worries over in my mind. Lauren has me as her mate, but she thinks I might reject her in the same way as the unworthy human male did. Maybe my nest isn’t good enough. It’s not like it’s one I’ve made. And a pre-made nest can’t possibly be the same as one created by me. If I want my eregri to be the happiest female on Ustokos, and I do, then I’m going to have to up my nest making game.

When I’m sure she sleeps soundly, I very carefully unpeel myself from her and go see what can be done.
